A closer look at the construction and finished elevated boardwalk:

Why This Design Worked
The boardwalk’s elevated post-and-beam construction was chosen to minimize ground disturbance in a sensitive woodland habitat near the water’s edge. By raising the walking surface above the forest floor, the design allows natural water flow, root systems, and wildlife to remain undisturbed beneath the structure. The posts were strategically positioned to work around existing mature trees, preserving the character of the natural setting that makes the zoo’s woodland exhibit so unique.
Wire mesh safety railings were selected over solid barriers to maintain sightlines into the tree canopy and toward the lake, enhancing the guest experience without creating a visual barrier. The use of pressure-treated timber ensures the structure can withstand freeze-thaw cycles through Indiana winters — as evidenced by the construction team’s progress even in snowy conditions.
Standout Features
This project brought together several design and construction highlights:
- Treetop-level elevation — Guests walk at canopy height through a mature hardwood woodland
- Lakeside views — the route opens to scenic water views, enhancing the guest journey
- Wire mesh safety railings — open sightlines with full fall protection for public safety compliance
- Shade sail integration — the adjacent patio area features custom blue shade sails for covered outdoor comfort
- Privacy screening — green mesh perimeter screens create a defined, sheltered outdoor area
- All-season construction — completed through winter conditions, demonstrating crew expertise and project commitment
The Finished Result
Gleave Construction delivered a landmark feature for the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo — an elevated wooden boardwalk that transforms a dense woodland corridor into an accessible, safe, and visually stunning guest experience. Visitors can now walk above the forest floor, peer through the tree canopy, and take in sweeping views of the adjacent lake, all while the natural habitat beneath remains fully intact.
The project demonstrates Gleave Construction’s ability to execute complex custom deck structures in challenging environments — navigating existing mature trees, variable terrain, and winter weather — while delivering a finished product that exceeds both safety standards and aesthetic expectations.
