A pergola can turn a bare patio into a comfortable outdoor space you actually want to use in July, when Fort Wayne afternoons push past 85 degrees and shade is hard to find. As a custom pergola builder serving Fort Wayne since 1970, Gleave Construction designs each structure around your yard, your budget, and your HOA’s rules.

We have built outdoor structures alongside our fence and deck work for more than five decades. That local experience helps us account for Fort Wayne’s ground conditions, frost line, permitting requirements, and development-specific restrictions when planning your pergola.

Pergolas Built for Your Backyard

Most homeowners come to us for one of two reasons: they want shade over a patio, or they want to give an outdoor living space a more finished feel. A backyard pergola can do both. It defines the space, provides a structure for hanging lights or a shade canopy, and gives your seating area a clear focal point.

As a custom pergola builder, we measure your patio, consider where you use the space, and size the structure so the shade falls where you actually sit. If you already have or want a custom deck underneath, we can coordinate the pergola with it.

Every pergola is drawn for your specific lot before a single post goes in the ground. The result is a structure designed to work with your property rather than one that simply fits within it.

Pergola Materials: Cedar, Vinyl & Aluminum

Your pergola material affects its appearance, maintenance needs, and how it will age outdoors. We build in three materials:

Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar is the classic choice for homeowners who want the warmth and character of real wood. Its natural oils help resist rot and insects; it takes stain well, and it carries a 10-year material warranty. A cedar pergola requires resealing every few years to maintain its color, which is the trade-off for its natural wood appearance.

Powder-Coated Aluminum

Powder-coated aluminum offers a clean, dark-framed modern appearance with minimal maintenance and a lifetime material warranty. Our powder-coated aluminum finish is designed to resist fading and chalking caused by the Indiana sun in lower-quality coatings. Aluminum is also an option for a louvered pergola, where an adjustable roof allows you to open or close the slats for sun or shade.

Vinyl

Vinyl offers another low-maintenance option. It does not require staining and can be cleaned with a hose. When built from the right grade of material, it holds its white or tan color through freeze-thaw conditions without cracking.

Attached & Freestanding Pergola Options

Once you have chosen a material, the next decision is where and how the pergola should sit on your property.

An attached pergola connects to your house wall on one side and stands on posts on the other. It works well over a patio next to the home or near a back door, while the house carries part of the structure’s load.

A freestanding pergola stands independently on four or more posts. You can place it over a fire pit, hot tub, seating area, or any other part of the yard you want to turn into a destination. It also gives you more flexibility when deciding where the structure goes.

For Fort Wayne homeowners, the right option often comes down to the property itself. In newer developments across the southwest and north sides, including 46814, 46804, and 46845, setback requirements and HOA architectural standards can affect where a freestanding structure can be placed. We check those considerations during the estimate so the design you approve is one you can actually build.

Our Pergola Installation Process

A successful pergola project starts before installation day. We handle the planning details first, then build the structure around the approved design.

Pergola Permits & Fees in Allen County

Before building a pergola, it is important to determine whether your project requires a permit and what restrictions apply to the property. In Allen County, a pergola built as an accessory structure needs an Improvement Location Permit. Per the Allen County Department of Planning Services fee schedule, a structure of 200 square feet or less runs $70, while anything over 200 square feet runs $120.

We handle that filing for you, along with the utility locate and any HOA paperwork, as part of every project.

HOA requirements can also affect your project. Several Fort Wayne developments, including Bridgewater, Grey Hawk, and Bentley Cove, require architectural review before you build. We prepare the submission, but you should confirm your HOA’s requirements before installation, as standards vary from one community to another.

Current permit processing time varies with seasonal volume; contact the Allen County Building Department at 200 E Berry St, Suite 180, Fort Wayne, IN 46802. Phone: 260-449-7131 to find out about the permitting process.

Why Fort Wayne Homeowners Choose Gleave

When you are hiring a pergola builder near you, local experience matters. Gleave Construction has been building outdoor structures in the Fort Wayne area since 1970. That means we understand the local ground conditions, frost line, permitting process, and the practical considerations involved in building outdoors in Indiana.

Wendy, Adam, and Seth Gleave each bring 30-plus years of hands-on experience, and every foreman on a crew has 10-plus years in the field.
Cedar carries a 10-year material warranty, aluminum a lifetime warranty, plus a 1-year workmanship warranty on the installation itself.

The lumber and hardware that go into your pergola are the grades that last through Indiana’s freeze-thaw cycles.

Our crews have built for Electric Works, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, and Fort Wayne Trails.

Pergola FAQs

Pergola pricing depends on the size, material, and whether the roof is fixed or louvered, so we quote each project on-site rather than guess. Aluminum costs more up front than cedar but saves you the re-sealing required over time, and we provide a written price before work begins.
Yes, in nearly every case. Allen County requires an Improvement Location Permit: $70 for a structure of 200 square feet or less, and $120 for a larger structure. We pull the permit for you as part of the project.
The best material depends on how much maintenance you want. Powder-coated aluminum is the lowest-maintenance option and carries a lifetime material warranty, making it a strong choice for homeowners who want to minimize upkeep through Indiana’s freeze-thaw winters. Western Red Cedar provides a natural wood appearance and a 10-year material warranty, but it should be re-sealed every few years.
Pergola footings should extend below Indiana’s 36-inch frost line. We pour our footings to 42 to 48 inches and set them in concrete. Keeping the footings below the frost zone helps limit seasonal movement that can push posts out of position and affect the structure.
An attached pergola works well over a patio against the house or near a back door and uses less material because the house carries part of the load. A freestanding pergola can be placed elsewhere in the yard, including over a fire pit or hot tub. Setbacks and HOA rules can also influence the decision, and we check both during the estimate.
