I live in Fort Wayne, but one of my favorite nearby escapes is Ossian. It’s only about a 20-minute drive south, and every time I visit, I’m reminded why people love living there. The small-town charm is hard to beat—everyone seems to know each other, and the sense of community is real. I’ve visited Ossian Days in September. The town buzzes with parades, food vendors, and fun contests, like doughnut-hole eating. One of my favorite stops is Heyerly’s Bakery. It’s been around since 1931 and makes some of the best doughnuts in northeast Indiana. For lunch, I often go to Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant or grab coffee at Crimson House Café. These spots add a cozy feel to downtown.
What also impresses me about Ossian is how much green space they’ve packed into a smaller town. Archbold Wilson Park is huge and even has an 18-hole disc golf course, plus a playground that’s perfect when I bring my kids. There’s also Melching Park with its splash pad and pavilion, which is a favorite for summer hangouts. The community cares about keeping things nice. You can see this in the parks, schools, and local shops. Housing prices here are lower than in Fort Wayne. Ossian is close enough to enjoy a quiet, family-friendly vibe while still having city amenities nearby. For me, it’s the ideal blend of small-town warmth and quick access to all I love about northeast Indiana
